What’s An EPK & Why Do I Need One?

Let’s start with a good, old fashioned definition of the term ‘press kit’. Wikipedia states “A press kit, often referred to as a media kit in business environments, is a pre-packaged set of promotional materials of a person, company, or organization distributed to members of the media for promotional use. They are often distributed to announce a release or for a news conference.”

Until the digital age came upon us, press kits were traditionally designed in hard copy format and include a personal/company logo, press clippings, samples of work or art, photos, etc. The costs for these printed kits range from $700 to $5000…and that’s just for the design. You can tack the cost of printing on top of that.

An electronic press kit (EPK) comes in digital format such as a website, email or downloadable file. They are easy to distribute and seriously more affordable than the old school kits.

But the real beauty of an EPK is that it brings your image to life right before the viewers eyes. Its dynamic, it flows, it plays music and runs videos. It offers a sense of your personality and solidifies your professional image.  Once you see your photo, bio and work samples displayed in all their glory you know you’re finally getting somewhere. You’ve officially been packaged into the professional you know yourself to be.

Who Needs an EPK?

EPK’s are a publicity tool meant to showcase the talent or skills of a person or entity. They are used by musicians, actors, authors, athletes, entrepreneurs, executives, companies and professionals of all sorts. They can be used in any industry and, in this day and age, can even be especially helpful during a career transition. For example, an EPK can be a personal website that highlights your education, skills, accolades and achievements. You can upload your resume and provide an introductory video giving the potential client or employer a reason to remember you.

With employers receiving anywhere from 500 to 1000 applicants per online job posting you NEED something to get you noticed.

Bottom line: Anyone who needs the spotlight on them can benefit from an EPK. Once its developed all you need to do is provide your URL or email a link and suddenly your professional image literally comes to life. It’s really just that easy.
